The Exorcist (1974)

Its nomination was groundbreaking, marking one of the earliest instances in which the Academy recognized horror as art. The Exorcist went on to win two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.

Jaws (1976)

Despite being a massive commercial success and a summer blockbuster, there was debate over whether it truly belonged in the Best Picture category due to the type of movie it was. However, Jaws won three Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.

The Silence of the Lambs (1992)

The movie's historic Oscars sweep, which included winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay for The Silence of the Lambs, was celebrated for its quality across all aspects. While some argue it falls under the horror umbrella, others claim it doesn't.

The Sixth Sense (2000)

Its nomination was praised for its twist and emotional depth, but some critics felt its horror/ghost genre might have hurt its chances. Still, it managed to win awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

Black Swan (2011)

A psychological thriller with horror elements, Black Swan didn't win Best Picture but earned other accolades, including Natalie Portman's Best Actress win for her performance.

Get Out (2018)

Despite not winning Best Picture, Get Out won Best Original Screenplay. The film was also nominated for Best Director (Jordan Peele) and Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya).

The Substance (2024)

The Substance has clinched several nominations, including for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards.
